How Does DTF Printing Work?
Share
DTF printing — short for Direct-to-Film — is changing the game for apparel decoration. Whether you're printing T-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, or hats, DTF offers unmatched flexibility, vibrant colors, and long-lasting results.
At Prestige DTF Transfers, we specialize in premium DTF printing with fast 24–48 hour turnaround, and in this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how the DTF process works — step by step.
💡 What Is DTF Printing?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a digital printing method where designs are printed onto a special film using CMYK + white ink and then transferred to fabric using heat and pressure. Unlike screen printing or DTG (Direct-to-Garment), DTF doesn't require pre-treatment and works on nearly any fabric type — cotton, polyester, blends, fleece, and more.
⚙️ How DTF Printing Works: Step-by-Step
🖨️ 1. Design Is Printed on Film
Your design (usually a PNG with a transparent background) is sent to a DTF printer. The printer uses CMYK + White Ink to print the image onto a special PET film. The white ink acts as a base layer, making the colors pop.
🌨️ 2. Adhesive Powder Is Applied
While the ink is still wet, DTF powder adhesive is evenly applied to the entire printed area. This powder is what helps the transfer stick to the fabric during heat pressing.
🔥 3. Powder Is Melted (Cured)
Next, the film is gently heated — either in a curing oven or under a heat press (hover mode). This melts the adhesive powder just enough to bond it to the ink without damaging the design.
🧺 4. Film Is Ready for Pressing
Once cured, the film is fully press-ready. You can either cut individual designs or print a DTF gang sheet and cut as needed. These films can be stored or shipped — they stay usable until heat is applied.
🧵 5. Transfer Is Heat Pressed Onto Fabric
You position the DTF film on your garment and apply it using a heat press.
Recommended Heat Settings:
-
Temperature: 300–315°F
-
Time: 15–20 seconds
-
Pressure: Medium to High
-
Peel: Cold or Warm Peel
-
Second press: 6 seconds with parchment paper
Once pressed and peeled, your design is permanently transferred with a soft, stretchable feel that lasts wash after wash.
